Usually when you see furniture up for grabs on the street, it's not in the best condition. But every now and then, you'll come see a piece or item that presents potential and you'll start to imagine all the possibilities— "maybe with a good paint job I can fix 'er up?" Suddenly you're lugging an outdated, battered dresser into your home and picking out paint samples at IKEA. With a little love and some DIY magic, you can turn some pretty dull pieces into quality work while spending close to nothing—just like how we transformed these basic store stools into fancy seating during the holidays.

Twitter user @ginadivittorio posted about how she transformed a 'cutting board' she found on the street into a fancy new writing desk, and the Twitterverse is really digging this girl's creative chops. She includes a picture of the original cutting board, in all its scratched up glory. When the before and after photos are put side-to-side, you'll see the piece of wood looks almost new. "I rented a little hand sanding machine from Home Depot," she tells House Beautiful, explaining that she must have sanded off three to four millimeters to rid the wood of all its markings. Then she used a matte finish spray to give it that fresh cut look. After the surface had been touched up, she attached some black metal hairpin legs she bought from Michael's. In the span of approximately six hours, she brought this giant piece of wood to new heights—literally.

To attach the legs, she simply screwed them in as seen below. She estimates the wood slab was around 25 pounds, and must have been a countertop or giant cutting board in a past life.

We looked around the market for desks similar to this one and the prices start around $100 —see this Ashton Retro Walnut Desk look-alike at Pier 1—and can range into the mid hundreds. But if you were inspired by this DIY tweet, we found a couple options so you can make your own desk for much less. Here are similar table legs at Walmart for $19.99, as well as legs from Home Depot for under $26. We also found a selection of wooden surfaces to shop, since you might not be as lucky to find a giant piece of wood being handed out in your neighborhood.
